The Bahamas Union of Teachers was founded in 1947 by a Mrs. Mabel Cordelia Holloway Walker, who also served as the founding president and the first woman president of a trade union in Bahamas. The current President is Mrs. Belinda Wilson.

Following the hotel Union and the public sector union, the Bahamas Union of Teachers is the third largest union in Bahamas with over 4000 members.  They cover 165 schools on 24 islands and each school has a shop steward. Schools with 50 members or more there have a shop steward and an assistant.

The B.U.T. has 15 members on its executive and the breakdown of their executive is:

New Providence is the largest district with more than 50% of the members. The B.U.T.’s membership is made up of primary school, junior high school, and senior high school educators.
We have a collective bargaining agreement 2010- 2013 and awaiting negotiations to begin on the 2013 – 2016 agreement.

2 CUPS CRUSHED TOMATOES
2 CLOVES OF GARLIC(MINCED)
1 CUP TOMATO PASTE
4 TBS. BROWNING
2 CUPS PIGEON PEAS(COOKED)
5 LBS PAR BOILED RICE
10 CUPS WATER OR CHICKEN STOCK
SALT/PEPPER TO TASTE
DIRECTIONS:
SAUTE ONIONS AND PEPPERS IN VEGETABLE OIL.ADD CRUSHED TOMATOES AND GARLIC SAUTE FOR ABOUT 5 MINS,ADD PASTE AND SAUTE 5 MINS.ADD PEAS AND BROWNING AND THEN RICE.SEASON WTH SALT,PEPPER AND ADD WATER OR STOCK.BRING TO BOIL ON MEDIUM HEAT UNTIL LIQUID REDUCES ,THEN SIMMER ON LOW HEAT FOR ANOTHER 30-45 MINS. UNTIL RICE IS COOKED.
